The Margaret Hooligans – What Kind Of Donut Are You? (2023)
From their light-hearted tribute songs to existential crises to uplifting anthems, American duo The Margaret Hooligans have a lot in their arsenal. Not set for one style, tone or theme, the pair have a plethora of cocktail snacks on their sonic serving tray. I became hooked last year with ‘Red Rider’, then went on to indulge on ‘Doggie Pizza Crust’, and now I’m obsessed with ‘Witch On The Corner’. Punk wrapped in a sash of alternative rock with hazy psychedelic blues wafting about the package, The Margaret Hooligans is unlike anything you will have experienced before. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘What Kind of Donut Are You?’
As a trained psychologist, I am able to find some hidden meaning in almost any song I encounter. The Margaret Hooligans often quench my thirst for something fun-filled on the outside but grimy and existentially grungy inside, but not with ‘What Kind of Donut Are You?’. As with previous tracks ‘Witch On The Corner’ and ‘The Lost Stilt Walkers’, a bold rock-inspired tone blasts from the melody. Leaning more toward the grunge and garage-rock sound, Mr Strontium’s pounding drums match the brashness of Meg Cratty’s vocals. Interestingly, just as there is an abrupt crash of instruments throughout the tune, Meg Cratty’s vocals traipse along the song with a hidden warmth in the cracked vibe.
As I mentioned, The Margaret Hooligans tend to offer some time of existential theme exploring the darker depths of our soul; however, in ‘What Kind of Donut Are You?’ it’s all some fantastic fun. Fierce and ferocious, the pair actually ask you what kind of donut are you? It’s an age-old question and isn’t all that easily answered because of the mountain of types. From sprinkled to jam-filled, each donut has a particular charm and stands out in its unique way.
Recorded in the basement of Piety Street Publishing, mixed and mastered by Jon Huxtable, and produced by Mr Strontium, ‘What Kind of Donut Are You?’ is the fifth single from The Margaret Hooligans’ upcoming album Saturday Night In Bartertown. Doing what “The Flaming Lips did for Vaseline, elevating the mundane to garage rock greatness…”, Meg Cratty and Mr Strontium decide where they fall on the universal spectrum of donuts. Although, due to her gluten intolerance, Meg Cratty is no longer able to eat donuts. Don’t worry, we’ll be sure to enjoy the sensational taste for you while enjoying the unspeakably delicious tune.
