The Margaret Hooligans – The StoneHengers (2024)
If this is your introduction to The Margaret Hooligans, you might be living in a dark corner hidden from kaleidoscopic blasts of music. If you are one of the many already aware of their existence, then listen up! Take a moment, breathe deeply, cross your fingers and steady your nerves because The Margaret Hooligans return with more music. Are you prepared for the innovative eclecticism that rattles about your cranium for days, sometimes weeks? Well, they don’t give a damn as they hit our speakers with ‘The StoneHengers’.
Following the well-received singles ‘Seagull Oven Ready Cheese Dream’ and ‘Driver!’, ‘The StoneHengers’ highlights The Margaret Hooligans’ versatility in its genre-diverse existence. Unlike the collaborative song ‘Seagull Oven Ready Cheese Dream’ with The Qwarks, ‘The StoneHengers’ returns to the pair’s distinctive “all over the place and really no idea what’s going on, but I like it” style.
Leaning toward an indie-rock sound, ‘The StoneHengers’ shimmers with a rock-tinged sheen while flirting with vintage pop. Pounding drums hide behind the electric ukelele in a charming flow as Meg Cratty (vocals and ukelele) takes the fore with her obscure vocals. Gritty and slicing but with a softer, soothing tone, Cratty sits between Blondie and Bikini Kill in ‘The StoneHengers’. Interestingly, the excellent layering creates an unusual tone as each instrument separates from the other, so you feel oddly off-centre with Cratty singing in your ear and Mr Strontium’s drums and percussion whispering in the distance but all coming together in comforting confusion.
While each track from The Margaret Hooligans makes an impression, every single release seems to up the ante. My one concern is every new single might be the one that doesn’t meet our standards and I’ll feel disappointed, if not sad and lonely. I’m pleased to say there’s no stopping Meg Cratty and Mr Strontium as the pair once again plaster a smile on my face and worm their way into my brain with ‘The StoneHengers’.
