The Margaret Hooligans – Our Museum Of Failure (2023)
Inspired by life and the essence of humanity, as grimy as it can be sometimes, The Margaret Hooligans capture every detail, moment and emotion in their inimitable songs. When we left the US-based duo, we were contemplating what type of doughnut we were deep inside. Sprinkled with a cheery pink top or dark chocolate with the gooey centre? Fierce and ferocious, ‘What Kind of Donut Are You?’ was fantastic fun, but are we heading back to the gritty melancholic punk in the new single?
Following their well-received album Saturday Night In Bartertown capturing the concept of “civilisation is truly on the decline” (from an interview with The Margaret Hooligans), ‘Our Museum Of Failure’ reaches into one aspect of decline which might be veiled as societal enlightenment. The latest release, ‘Our Museum Of Failure’, is a damning look at gender fluidity, society and changing perceptions. For centuries, society has been patriarchal but in a world that defies the stereotypical rules what are the expectations, the template, the ideal and the niche in reality? The Margaret Hooligans explain:
“’Our Museum Of Failure’ is a driving rock anthem, a hymn to lost little boys trying to navigate what it means to be a man in an age where we are trying to dismantle the patriarchy. It asks why we obsess over heroes from the past that don’t represent the men we want in our future. In this new frontier of gender fluidity, how do boys define what kind of men they want to grow up to be?”
Produced in the basement of Piety Street Publishing with mastering by KRAMER and production by Mr Strontium, ‘Our Museum Of Failure’ shifts from the duo’s gritty rawness to a classic rock anthem. Stringing together the electric ukelele with pounding drums and a hint of percussion belying the single, there is a sense of organised chaos. Yet, while this ferocity jumps at you, it is elegantly veiled but also intertwined with classic rock power. Think the intensity of Queen but with slivers of dark punk lurking in the melody. Sincere, sentimental and hard-hitting, The Margaret Hooligans’ new single captures a changing society with anthemic rock while pinning the frustrated angst in angry punk slices.
