The Margaret Hooligans – Hey Love (2023)

Gaining notoriety as an obscure, bittersweet, eclectic and hard-hitting duo, The Margaret Hooligans has been described as “a unique phenomenon on the modern rock scene…” (Indie Dock Music Blog) and “..real rock made of instinct, passion and love” (Edgar Allan Poets). Turning our heads in mid-2022 with ‘Red Rider’, we are constantly looking forward to music from the US-based pair. The most recent addition to their critically acclaimed repertoire is the single ‘Hey Love’.

Personally, I believe ‘Pete and Roger’ was one of the more stylish, sophisticated Margaret Hooligans’ songs until I heard ‘Hey Love’. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, ‘Hey Love’ is a love song but without all the mushy hearts and roses. Using another tale as a metaphor for the theme, ‘Hey Love’ explores the end of a relationship represented by an astronaut “launching himself into space and leaving his loved ones behind as a way of talking about the distance growing between him and his lover…” Shared from the perspective of the lover, she yearns for him constantly wondering if he will remember her as the distance grows. To me, that is highly relatable (I mean the yearning, not the astronaut jumping into space), and another example of The Margaret Hooligans connecting with audiences through obscure melodies.

Following their brash punk single ‘Doggie Pizza Crust’, ‘Hey Love’ moves from the pair’s signature sound experimenting with a more mellifluous psychedelic-rock meets post-punk tones. Performed with a nostalgic flair, ‘Hey Love’ drags us back to the bold rock sounds of yesteryear. Lying somewhere between The Cure, Radiohead and Cranberries, the eclectic single has a whimsical sensation to the melody; however, an obscure boldness oozes forth with hard-hitting guitars and drums.

Passionate, sincere, sentimental and filled with the eclecticism heard in all of The Margaret Hooligan’s songs, the pair prove, once again, that they are not to be pigeon-holed.
