The Margaret Hooligans – Feedback (2022)
Described by notable blogs as “a unique phenomenon on the modern rock scene…” (Indie Dock Music Blog), “made of instinct, passion and love” (Edgar Allan Poets) and “…have carved out a wacky and wonderful niche of their own” (Yack Magazine), The Margaret Hooligans are a true force of nature. From their track ‘Red Rider’ to ‘Pete and Roger’, we have followed the UK-based duo’s awesomeness. With an obscurity and eclecticism accompanied by poetic lyricism, The Margaret Hooligans is not to be ignored. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Feedback’.
Following their single ‘Pete and Roger’ (a tribute track to Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey), The Margaret Hooligans meld elements of garage rock with noise rock and punk sentiments in ‘Feedback’. Brash, abrupt and a beautiful assault on the senses, ‘Feedback’ has distorted guitars, pounding drums and a unique electric ukulele throughout the arrangement. I could say the instrumentation comes together in a soothing whole, but that would be lying to you. The boldness of each instrument has prominence and stands out on its own; then again, there is a harmonic unity in the crazy frenzy that is ‘Feedback’.
One of the more amusing parts of the single is the opening. In a “dodgy Irish accent”, Mr Strontium begs Cratty to sing in her beautiful way. She says she doesn’t particularly take requests, but when she lets go a frenzy of frustration filters through her tones.
As I mentioned, the introduction can be amusing; however, the charming interlude flips into a chaotic sonic explosion talking about “opinion overload and the purpose of oversharing”. The Margaret Hooligans explain that ‘Feedback’ is “…an energetic anthem for the introvert who has found online socialising just as stressful as in-person interactions. Being released as our post-Covid world slowly returns to normal, it [‘Feedback’] encapsulates the confusion of trying to figure out what the new rules of civility are.”
