The Margaret Hooligans – Alley Cat Stomp (2023)
There are bands that stick in your head with a charming indulgent grin sure to be replaced, and then there are bands that jump off the page, scream in your face, and stomp to be heard. The Margaret Hooligans is a stomper. With a bold, boisterous, rambunctious brand of genre-diverse sound, the duo have made their way across the planet gaining a loyal following far beyond their US borders. Whether this following is the result of pure dedication or mind-controlled obsession, Mr. Strontium (drums and percussion) and Meg Cratty (vocals, electric guitar and electric ukelele) produce earworm after earworm with an infectious flair. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Alley Cat Stomp’.
Following the well-received singles ‘Revenge Of The ScarJo’ and ‘Our Museum Of Failure’, The Margaret Hooligans dive once more into a world of rock with fierce punk spicing up the mix. Recorded in the basement of Piety Street Publishing by Mr Strontium with mastering by Shimmy Disc Records’ KRAMER, ‘Alley Cat Stomp’ is an eclectic slick of pounding drums, electric guitar, electric ukelele, and some flits of percussion like the cowbell clanging mid-song. While there are diverse elements mashed in a distorted collision of sound, The Margaret Hooligans bind everything in an odd harmony carried in its discomfort.
The radical melody has you twirling about in a head-spinning sense of wonder; however, the crazed tune is not just about a chaotic clang of instruments but profound lyricism. The Margaret Hooligans explain:
“’Alley Cat Stomp’…is both a tribute to Stevie Van Zandt, one of rock n’ roll’s great guitarists and garage rock radio DJs, as well as a commentary on gun violence. With his central role on The Sopranos and his crucial presence in the E Street Band, Van Zandt can be seen to represent a unique blend of these American successes and dismal failures.”
In addition to the single, The Margaret Hooligans released an official music video for ‘Alley Cat Stomp’. You can view the video below and/or via their YouTube channel.
