The Loud Bangs – The Alice Experience (2022)

Just over a year since their formation and US-based rockers The Loud Bangs already have a reputation as “the Pink Floyd of shoegaze” among audiences. Energetic, engaging and quite surreal, their music can tip you into a kaleidoscopic whirlpool of sound with a surreal ambience. Focusing on relevant and significant themes in the 21st century, the band is not just something you put on to chill out to – I mean, they are but they capture your attention with more than just “sporadic howls some oohs and ahhs and a few cryptic words here and there…”

Despite being a relatively new band, The Loud Bangs blasted into 2022 releasing several singles and EPs per month. Following their single ‘(Seeking) The Alice Experience’, the four-piece release their five-track EP, The Alice Experience. Known for sharing remixes amidst EPs, there is a versatility and innovation in The Loud Bangs as they experiment with different arrangements. In The Alice Experience, the band show even more flexibility and eclecticism with diverse arrangements proving they are not to be pigeon-holed.

Open to provocative themes, The Loud Bangs are not afraid to represent harsh truths in their music. As with Pink Floyd and other shoegaze meets post-punk bands from the 80s, The Loud Bangs use primarily instrumentation to express the message behind their music. The Alice Experience explores vocalist Alice Street’s focus on mental health challenges and the threat of hospitalisation. Highlighting their innovative way of conveying emotion through sound, each of the tracks seems to represent a particular feeling, emotion or thought of this significant concept. For instance, ‘The Stacey Diagram’ is heavier than ‘The Edith Formation’ navigating you through the evocative mentality of dealing with mental health issues.

Overall, The Loud Bangs are exciting, intriguing and obscure. Sincerity, sentimentality and honesty ooze through their music, so be prepared for a wild ride when listening to The Alice Experience.
