The Kid and I – Hey (2021)
The brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Jacob Powell, The Kid and I drags you back to the sound of the 80s with a unique flair. Beginning as an indie rock project during the first UK Covid-19 lockdown, The Kid and I’s music oozes raw honesty with evocative intimacy – and all this comes from Powell’s home studio. Despite being a relatively new act, Powell has featured in Nexus Music Blog, FV Music Blog, Mystic Sons, Amazing Radio, Costa Calida Radio and many more press outlets. The latest addition to his growing discography is the single ‘Hey’.
Following the upbeat, jovial and high-energy debut single ‘White Feather’ (read our review here), Powell takes a step back with his smooth, flowing single ‘Hey’. Collaborating with singer-songwriter and pianist Jennifer Glatzhofer, ‘Hey’ has a calmer, more mystical element created by the interplay of dual vocals. I’m not saying that Powell’s charming vocals aren’t enough to win my heart, the incorporation of Glatzhofer’s dulcet tone adds a little something extra to the single.
Using a personal narrative, the engaging lyricism is executed with a conversational structure. You are taken along the tale of one person meeting another, feeling a connection and also feeling that “an underlying sense of something not quite right under the surface”. As a languid track the overall vibe is calming; however, there is a tumultuous bubbling of emotions lying beneath the surface. It is this juxtaposition of chilled and freaking out that illustrates The Kid and I’s innovativeness as a musician.
Yes, the melody has true innovativeness in itself, but Powell’s eclecticism is obvious when you compare this single to his debut ‘White Feather’. Both stark with an enchanting originality Powell showcases his distinctive style, but the bouncy to still and flowing is evident of his evolution. The interweaving of various instruments, layers and textures add complexity to an “easy to listen to” tune.
All in all, I adore The Kid and I. He may have only a couple of tracks to his repertoire but I can’t wait to see what is next. I bet it will be another completely different style setting him to boundary-breaking stardom.
