The Hybris – What If (2022)

Described by Sinusoidal Music as a collective that “…make catchy, fun and socially conscious music that packs a twist…”, The Hybris has both attitude and infectious happiness. Formed in 2020 by long-time friends, the trio take a provocative stance in their music while still getting you tapping your toe with a giddy smile on your face. One element that makes The Hybris unique is its remote collaboration. While they were originally based in Germany, the lads now reside in the US, France and Germany making music over the internet; amazing what you can do online nowadays. The latest addition to their well-received discography is ‘What If’.

Following their album Music, Vol. 1, The Hybris navigate a mishmash of pop, funk, punk and indie-rock in their new track ‘What If’. Bold and abrupt, the single is a bit “in your face” with pounding drums, dynamic guitars and bold vocals. Yet, while distortion exists in the arrangement tossing you about a whirlpool of sound, there is a melodic flow beneath the brashness.

Aggressive and angsty, the lads ooze chaotic fury in this hard rock gem of a song. Inspired by life experiences and humans in their entirety, The Hybris can be considered a provocative band. Social narratives touch on political issues in their songs, and the depth of their emotions can be heard through the hard-hitting sound. ‘What If’ is a harmonic tapestry of grungy emotion and existential angst in this dystopian reality. The Hybris explain that the track is “…a bittersweet anthem about saving the world. We stand in the middle of a burning planet with a match in our hand and an ignorant smile on our face; our kids will pay for it. Sure, this song won’t change it, but we wanted to give our comment…”

If I had to describe The Hybris, I would probably call them abrupt, forceful and sincere. An almost palpable grittiness can be heard in ‘What If’, yet there is a softer side to the song as they whisper an important message in your ear – save the world.
