The Hybris – Keep The Wolves Away (2022)
In Greek tragedies, the term “hybris” stood for arrogance, exaggerated self-pride, over-confidence, and an excess of ambition often resulting in the transgressor’s ruin. Taking it as a definition of today’s sociopolitical situation, it is pretty accurate; however, I’m unsure whether it is the ideal name for the band that questions these political attitudes. In my opinion, alternative rock trio The Hybris are humble, passionate and, okay, may a little ambitious. An international project, Ringo Rabbit, Beanie Bison and Malcolm Mandrill (pseudonyms as three wannabe superheroes on a mission to save the world) share their intriguing, unusual and engaging music with the world.
Following their track ‘What If’, The Hybris release a new single titled ‘Keep The Wolves Away’. Once again showing they are not afraid of provocative themes, ‘Keep The Wolves Away’ is a song about “the effects of war on its victims in general, one of the most serious political crises of recent decades, and the dangers it poses to the entire planet…” In a time of uncertainty, this is potentially one of the more relevant concepts for any song; at least, that’s my opinion.
“Our music moves between pop, punk, indie-rock and alternative rock, I think it sounds some kind of retro. The songs are quite different, but ‘Keep The Wolves Away’ is a bit more straightforward than other songs from the band, but we still try to create a consistent, recognisable style…” – Ringo Rabbit on ‘Keep The Wolves Away’
Capturing the aggressive, forceful nature of reality, ‘Keep The Wolves Away’ has a heavy, hard-hitting, metal sound with punk inclinations. Interestingly enough, while the angst, anger and aggression of society are evident, The Hybris also express the vulnerable fearfulness of victims in the powerful single. The Hybris has been compared to My Chemical Romance and Billy Talent in the past, and I still think stands with ‘Keep The Wolves Away’; however, tinges of Rammstein can be felt throughout the passionate single.
