THE HYBRIS – Imposter Syndrome (2023)

Embracing the power of remote collaboration in the 21st century, THE HYBRIS is a trio of superheroes on a mission to save the world with their unique music. Originally from Germany, Ringo Rabbit (based in Germany), Beanie Bison (based in France) and Malcolm Mandrill (based in the USA) write, perform and produce everything from their joint virtual studio. Although often compared to Foo Fighters, Billy Talent and The Killers, THE HYBRIS fuse various genres into one boundary-breaking style. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Imposter Syndrome’.

Following their single ‘Keep The Wolves Away’, THE HYBRIS retain a melodic metal heaviness in ‘Imposter Syndrome’; however, there seems to be a greater leaning toward old-school punk in the new single. Diversity seems to exist with this band, yet they retain a recognisable hard-hitting style that is purely THE HYBRIS. ‘Imposter Syndrome’ has the brashness of punk nestled within a soothing alternative rock meets melodic metal sonic river. For me, there has always been a hint of My Chemical Romance flitting through the lads’ music and ‘Imposter Syndrome’ stings of early MCR with the underlying ferocity exuding a darker, more sinister tone.

Often discussing socio-political topics with their social commentary, THE HYBRIS are provocative in nature. I mean, what do you expect from a band whose name (taken from Greek tragedies) stands for exaggerated self-pride and excess of ambition which ultimately leads to the transgressor’s ruin? ‘Imposter Syndrome’ touches on inner angst, turmoil and feelings of inadequacy. The band explain that “the song is about a feeling many of us know – not being good enough. Not good enough in your job, not good enough for relationships, not good enough to create anything of value…” Interestingly enough, while the song has a melancholic sentiment, it simultaneously has a sense of empowerment and understanding as THE HYBRIS lay bare the painful fragments of low self-worth in ‘Imposter Syndrome’.
