The Horn – Do It Now (2022)

A few months ago, The Horn tickled our eardrums with their powerful single ‘Passion’, and now they’re back with some more entertaining music. The collaborative music project of veteran musicians Nick True, Danny Monk, Jonny Taylor, Ed Cox and Alex Moorse, the lads attempt to recapture the energy of their 80s rock songs. Interestingly enough, while The Horn has a nostalgic flair to their music, an indie-rock contemporariness slithers through the old-school melodies. Described by blogs as “sizzling” (It’s All Indie), “unyielding” (Beautiful Buzzz) and having a “timeless quality” (Turtle Tempo), UK-based The Horn are musical masters creating masterful music.

The latest addition to their well-received discography is the four-track EP Do It Now, and we’re taking a gander at the title track. As with ‘Passion’, ‘Always Late’ and ‘Power Show’, ‘Do It Now’ dips into the whimsical ambience of 80s indie-rock; however, a modern-day pop-rock tone is drizzled atop the rock melody. Easily comparable to the likes of REM and Radiohead, The Horn has a sophisticated sound in the flowing melodies. Then again, the lads do have past experience in the 80s music scene – a maturity that is easily heard within the arrangement.

Just as the melody has a raw and intimate harmony about it, so does the poetic lyricism. A sincere, sentimental and reflective song, ‘Do It Now’ was inspired by life in an uncertain society. Songwriter Nick True penned the track with the perspective of how “our every waking moment is full of anxiety due to the deluge of information we’re exposed to and is compounded by the relative helplessness an individual can feel…we often lose focus of what’s important to us…”

A melancholic song, no doubt, with a poignant message; however, the melancholy is met by an upbeat, toe-tapping tune. In fact, a sense of empowerment and prompting to live life to the fullest is met in the charming single. As the band sings, “do it now, what are you waiting for?”
