The Hogstad Brothers – Spinning Round (2025)

Musical alchemists, The Hogstad Brothers draw together a plethora of sounds in their unique musical concoctions. From the pop-driven tones of 2021’s ‘Caged Birds’ to the avant-garde sound of ‘Lost In A World’, the US-based duo traipse across pools of indie-pop, psychedelia, pop, funk, RnB, and soul. With their energetic, enthusiastic, confident musical presence – all as powerful through our iPod as at one of their live gigs – Jonathan and Brandon push musical boundaries to the limit… and then overstep them with eclectic flair. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Spinning Round’.

Taken from their upcoming album Creatures In The Dirt, ‘Spinning Round’ is the first release from The Hogstad Brothers in four years. Following the critically acclaimed 2021 EP A World of Love & Hate, the duo drag listeners to old-school 70s funk; however, with its vintage sound, there is a breath of modern-day funk making ‘Spinning Round’ perfect for yesteryear’s discos and today’s dancefloors.

A brotherly combination of songwriting, instrumentation and production, ‘Spinning Round’ is a family affair. As a groovy, laidback funk tune, the song embraces a bold bass, soothing guitars, a mellotron, and intriguing percussion – the Brazilian pandeiro injecting a light-hearted Latin vibe. For me, however, it is not the diverse instruments joining in harmonic rhythms that complete a sonic symphony. No, it is the inclusion of the brothers’ rich vocals that adds an extra funk flair to its gentle cacophony.

Melodically, ‘Spinning Round’ oozes smoothness, soothing and a groovy layer of kaleidoscopic music; however, it is the lyricism that presents another facet of the song’s personality. The Hogstad Brothers explain:

“This funky, genre-blurring song tells the story of a psychedelic explorer descending back down from the heights of spiritual ecstasy and grappling with what, if anything, has changed within him as the light fades and his shadows grow back. It carries a universal message of healing, hope, and empathy for ourselves and each other as we struggle.”
