The Frisky Gypsys – Love Is Blind (2022)

Known for their dynamic, energetic and engaging performances, Ireland-based rock group The Frisky Gypsys is a force to be reckoned with. Formed approximately four years ago, the six-piece brought together their diverse musical experiences to create passionate and soulful music. In January 2021, the lads released their well-received debut EP Dream Big receiving praise from Music News, It’s All Indie, Send Me Your Ears, The Independent and various playlists. The latest addition to the group’s discography is the single ‘Love Is Blind’.

Hot on the heels of their track ‘I Am Falling’, ‘Love Is Blind’ touches on issues of anxiety, frustration and toxic love. It questions how love can be your best friend and worst enemy at the same time. The song was conceived in lead singer Steven Hamilton’s front room and takes you on an emotive journey through a vulnerable sonic forest.

Recorded with Gavin Glass at Orphan Recording Studios, ‘Love Is Blind’ is a well-layered, hard-hitting and high-powered indie-rock tune. Exploring various sub-genres of rock, ‘Love Is Blind’ slathers old-school indie-rock with tinges of folk-rock in the sonic tapestry. What I find interesting is the folk-inspired clarity to the melody with Hamilton’s rich vocals; however, the arrangement has a smooth flowing of the folk vocal execution to a combination of rock instrumentation.

Soothing and sentimental with an intense intimacy, ‘Love Is Blind’ is a toe-tapping, kaleidoscopic swirl of sound. An almost palpable grittiness exists in the catchy choruses, but the vulnerability of Hamilton’s dulcet tones makes the journey from verse to chorus quite gentle and spine-chilling. With absolute ease, The Frisky Gypsys explore human fragility in ‘Love Is Blind’.
