The Freight – See Ya (2023)

Self-described (at least on their Spotify) as an “upbeat fusion of rock ‘n’ roll, blues-rock, soul and jam mixed with a contemporary modern rock edge”, it makes sense that The Freight is one of the more outgoing, enthusiastic rock bands I have come across. Not only are they commenting on their eclectic rock range, but various notable publications agree saying “their sound has distant roots that fish in the great rock of the past” (Edgar Allan Poets), “rock fans of all flavour will find something to love in The Freight’s music” (The Static Dive), and “an uncommon mix of rock, funk, post-punk and originality” (Jammerzine). Alongside these reviews, The Freight has also received coverage from iHeart Radio, Less Than 1000 Followers, and Rock Era Magazine reaching audiences on a global scale. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘See Ya’.

Following their track ‘Done With You’, this US-based quintet shifts from heavier rock ballads to an upbeat, high-paced hard rock tone with elements of classic rock in ‘See Ya’. As with previous work, the melody is guitar-driven with emphasis on the powerful riffs and solos (particularly the solo in the middle of the song courtesy of frontman Adam Tiro). Yet, while the guitar seems to own ‘See Ya’, the other instruments have prominence with pounding drums, dynamic bass, and even an awesome percussion section. What I find truly astonishing is how the instrumentation has individual presence but comes together as a harmonic, united whole in the end.

Leaning toward old-school Aerosmith, The Freight adds a nostalgic flair to ‘See Ya’. Tiro’s gruff vocals are the perfect accompaniment to the classic rock arrangement enhancing the authenticity of the vintage style. A firm fan favourite at live performances, it seemed natural to take ‘See Ya’ to the studio. Interestingly enough, while the song is an in-studio recording, it retains the exuberance of a live performance – almost as if you were at the front of the stage jumping about and singing along.
