The Freight – Overrated (2022)

Dealing with new music on a daily basis, you tend to find bands you hate, bands that are alright as background noise, bands you like, and then bands you follow from the first note – The Freight is the latter. A fusion of old-school rock ‘n’ roll, soul and 90s alternative rock, the US-based quintet bring a modern edginess to the sounds of yesteryear. Turning heads across the globe, we are not the only ones singing their praises. Over the past year or so, The Freight has featured on The Static Dive, Rock Era Magazine, Edgar Allan Poets and many more – all with good things to say. The latest addition to their critically acclaimed discography is ‘Overrated’.

After a lot of hard work in the studio, The Freight blast into 2022 with three straight singles aiming to up the ante. ‘Overrated’ is the first of these singles and is “super special”. Co-written by frontman Adam Tiro and The Elovaters’ drummer Nick Asta, ‘Overrated’ is a collaboration to kick off their journey in modern rock.

Nodding to the sounds of 90s rock, the melodic arrangement of ‘Overrated’ may be a melding of Good Charlotte, Bon Jovi and a lighter Three Days Grace. Yet, this is not exactly fair on The Freight who have a distinctive contemporary edginess to their modern rock style. Unlike their blues-inspired single ‘See You Tonight’, ‘Overrated’ is a melodic rock arrangement from the first note. What I enjoy is the fusion of dynamic rock ‘n’ roll guitars, pounding drums, smooth vocals and an interspersed acoustic piano. The piano solo bridging catchy choruses with moving verses is particularly heartfelt.

Penned as a tribute to discovering love is actually overrated, ‘Overrated’ looks at the relationship you are desperately trying to save but then you realise it’s not worth the effort. In their words, “…you discover that this whole love business is overrated.” Yet, while there is a “done with it” attitude in Tiro’s vocals, his dulcet tones retain a soothing quality wrapping you in a gossamer blanket of kaleidoscopic warmth. Basically, he’s done with love, but it hasn’t made him bitter in any way.
