The Exhales – Call On Karma (2022)

Despite having only one year beneath their belt, indie-rock group The Exhales are turning heads left, right and centre. Formed in late 2021 by vocalist Jack Hayes, the lads hit the ground running with sold-out shows in Glasgow during early 2022. With well-crafted lyricism and hard-hitting melodies, Hayes, bassist Aaron, drummer Robert and guitarist Josh Parr emerged on the Scottish indie scene as a force to be reckoned with. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Call On Karma’.

Following their well-received debut single ‘Silver Smile’, which earned them coverage on Amazing Radio and various playlists, The Exhales find a line between indie-rock and alternative rock in ‘Call On Karma’. If Kings of Leon were to have a child with The Wombats, the chances are it would be The Exhales and their life soundtrack begins with ‘Call On Karma’. Bold, robust and hard-hitting, the sophomore single is a melodic combination of pounding drums, dynamic guitars and Hayes’ soothing vocals. What I find interesting about this combination is how each element receives prominence, so you know what each individual is capable of, but it all comes together as a unique, united sonic whole.

Listening to the melody, I fully understand why The Exhales is deemed one of the brightest emerging bands in the UK; however, it is the depth of the poetic lyricism that highlights their innovation. Telling the tale of escaping small-town attitudes, toxic relationships, personal loss, and the understanding that this reality is not the standard, ‘Call On Karma’ is an anthem for almost every person. The relatable lyrics capture human fragility and vulnerability in a delicate way, while the warm vocals soothe your heart and send your soul soaring to new heights.

Sincere, sentimental and filled with genuine sensitivity, The Exhales release their intimate new single ‘Call On Karma’. One of the better bands I have come across this year, I cannot wait to hear what else the lads have up their sleeves.
