The Dream Spiral – Trigger To My Head (2024)

Brimming with eclecticism and innovation, The Dream Spiral is a spiral into experimental innovation twirled about contemporary modern-day edginess. Vintage but fresh, obscure but filled with intricate clarity, bold but demure, and all the time awesome, the Australian five-piece enchants audiences with hypnotic tunes. A few months ago, we had the pleasure of reviewing The Dream Spiral’s second single ‘Redemption’ finding it a decadent shove into a joyful dream-like haze. Today, we are once again thrilled to delve into their most recent single ‘Trigger To My Head’.

Following the single ‘Redemption’, the first release from the band in two years, ‘Trigger To My Head’ is a lighter version of ‘Redemption’. Retaining the leaning toward vintage Depeche Mode, a nostalgic vibe flutters in ‘Trigger To My Head’; however, a strong 90s/2000s indie-rock sound exists in the track. Embracing the eccentricity of EDM in a rock-inspired song, industrial beats pulsate beneath the track while synths slice through like bright shimmery lights cutting a grungy puddle of despair.

Once again taking us on an emotional journey beyond listening to the music, we are immersed in a whirlpool of scorching guitars, bold drums and singeing electronica. On one hand, the single caresses your skin sending shivers through your veins; however, on the other side, it clings to your flesh like a second skin piercing your heart, capturing your soul, and leaving you gasping for breath. The juxtaposition of toe-tapping, dance floor anthem and desperate flush of hopelessness, turmoil and confusion is intriguing but also a bit chaotic.

The melody is intense but, for me, it is the vocals that pack a forceful punch. Dulcet, rich and filled with warmth, an almost subdued voice wistfully glides through the hard-hitting instrumentation guiding you to a brighter light. Then again, it is with a devilish twinkle in his eye that the cherished voice has you reflect on the uncertainties of society. The band explains: “The song is about the feeling of hopelessness that we can sometimes feel in the modern world.”
