The Daytime High – Waterfall (2023)

Inspired by the likes of Deep Purple, Foo Fighters, Beatles, Oasis, Radiohead, Nirvana and The Clash, you can imagine the diversity of The Daytime High’s sound. Unique and eclectic, but with a leaning toward melancholic rock, The Daytime High is highly evocative with its music. Formed in the summer of 2022, The Daytime High can be considered a minnow in the music scene, but they are already gaining a reputation for engaging music. Featured on notable publications and playlists, the lads have been described as “a wonderful rock experience” (Less Than 1000 Followers) and having “…the element of energy building up and down…” (Sinusoidal Music). The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Waterfall’.

Recorded by Rich Buckland and mixed by Curt Piar, ‘Waterfall’ is on the heels of The Daytime High’s debut track ‘Reaper’. Similar to ‘Reaper’, the sophomore single has an old-school flair to its arrangement. Yet, unlike ‘Reaper’, ‘Waterfall’ moves away from the hazy 80s post-punk sound bringing a modern-day rock meets grunge tone to the melody. What I find intriguing about this well-textured arrangement is how all instruments have a nostalgic sentimentality within a contemporary rock frenzy. So, you’re getting something from yesteryear but also perfect for audiences who prefer newer rock tunes.

While the melody can hold its own as a sound to truly intoxicate listeners, The Daytime High showcase further innovation with an intimate intensity to their music. As I mentioned, the band have a leaning toward melancholic rock with desperation and distress expressed in ‘Waterfall’. Interestingly enough, while a vulnerability oozes from Micael Johansson’s vocals, the song is actually one of optimism and empowerment; then again, overcoming challenging situations requires a degree of vulnerability.

“A song about trying to find a sense of belonging and connection to the world around us but facing the alienation by charting our way and not conforming.” – The Daytime High on ‘Waterfall’

Elegantly exploring human fragility and vulnerability with a rugged sound, The Daytime High weave a musical masterpiece with ‘Waterfall’.
