The Crystal Teardrop – By The River (2023)

When we left The Crystal Teardrop, they were bringing a tinge of the 60s to our ears in ‘Nine Times Nine’. With a mutual passion for the sounds of the 60s, a psychedelic rope glittering with silvery light weaves Alexandra Rose (vocals, guitar and mandola), Leon Jones (lead guitar), Caitlin Hare (bass), Stuart Gray (organ) and Connor Wells (drums) in a flash of music. Despite their relatively new status as The Crystal Teardrop, the group are already garnering a following with rave reviews on an international scale. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘By The River’.

Following their debut track ‘Nine Times Nine’, The Crystal Teardrop cling to their folk-rock roots with a psychedelic shimmer of sound. A nostalgic whiff of The Mamas and The Papas flows through the melody; however, the acid folk meets dream-pop tone are somewhat more soothing and intoxicating than ‘California Dreamin’ or ‘I Saw Her Again’. Shimmering guitars meet hypnotic drums with Rose’s husky vocals giving it an otherworldly vibe. Insert a strong Eastern flavour into the melody with Lucian Thomas’ sitar, and there is a splash of Western folk-rock meeting Eastern roots in a kaleidoscopic swirl of sound.

In the ethereal flood of music, one can become lost in the trip called ‘By The River’. Yet, while you flounder in a psychedelic pool, the single has a thought-provoking profoundness lurking in the tune. The band explain:

“The mysterious twists and turns of ‘By The River’s narrative seek to highlight the nature of love, loss and the human condition. The track’s musical structure adds to the ethereal and immersive lyrical theme and encourages the listener to reflect on what is truly significant for each of us.”
