The Chris Ruben Band – Parasite (2024)

Renowned for their electric, energetic and enthusiastic performances, The Chris Ruben Band sends sparks down your spine and a jolt to your brain in the high-voltage gigs. Needless to say, these sensational shows intoxicate live audiences; however, the engaging melodies offer a hypnotic intensity on an international scale. Since their inception in 2015, The Chris Ruben Band has gained critical acclaim and loyal adoration far beyond their US borders. Already featured on The Other Side Reviews, the indie-rock six-piece hit our ears with 2021’s ‘Won’t See You’ and 2022’s ‘Take The Ride’. Today we delve into their discography once again with the new single ‘Parasite’.

Our first taste of The Chris Ruben Band’s upcoming album An Incredible Forever, ‘Parasite’ sees the group saunter into 2024 with bold confidence. As with previous singles ‘Flamingo Garden’ and ‘I Wanna Rock Your Body (Til The Break Of Dawn, Then You’re Gone)’, ‘Parasite’ hits you between the eyes with a rock-tinged thwack – a good thwack though.

An intriguing blend of 90s rock from Ash to Weezer, The Ataris and New Found Glory, ‘Parasite’ is intimate, daring, confident, brash, raw… actually, it’s a kaleidoscopic indie-rock/grunge/alternative rock madness. Not as speedy as ‘I Wanna Rock Your Body (Til The Break Of Dawn, Then You’re Gone)’, the new song is more sing-along with a toe-tapping bounce harmonious in its chaos. The band explains:

“A weirdly nostalgic and punchy jam that will certainly liven up any go you have round… It’s as if someone gave Mickey Mouse a speedball and set him loose on a community of kind and neighbourly people. Terror but sweet.”

Listening to ‘Parasite’, actually anything by The Chris Ruben Band, is like recklessly plunging headfirst into a sonic whirlpool. Chris Ruben’s dramatic guitars match Russ Miller’s pounding drums as Eugene Iovine’s keyboards shimmer with fairy-like charm and Brendan Allan’s bass boasts powerful beats in the fuzzy haze. As with the melody, Ruben’s rich vocals tingle along your skin in a happy hug but give you a hard shove with a cheeky grin.
