The Century Band – January (2022)

With a sophisticated, elegant and heart-warming sound, US-based The Century Band wrap you in warm sonic blankets with their music. Truth be told, the group has only released two singles to date (at least, that’s what we see on Spotify), but the maturity of the melodies is a testament to their natural talent as musicians. This is my introduction to The Century Band, but they are already reaching international audiences with features on Roadie Music, YMX, We Write About Music and Music For All – to name but a few publications. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘January’.

Following their well-received single ‘New York Song’, ‘January’ demonstrates the group’s flair for innovation and versatility. Unlike ‘New York Song’ which has a strong old-school soul feeling (particularly with Bobby Harden on the vocals), ‘January’ adopts a folk-rock meets blues sound. Think something between Fleetwood Mac and Eric Clapton, but with bold originality, The Century Band certainly stand out amidst the rest. A blending of charismatic guitars, pounding drums, and an interspersed keyboard to add that soft “plink plonk”, ‘January’ has a harmonic, enchanting feel about it.

As I mentioned, The Century Band have a heart-warming sound wrapping you in warm sonic blankets and ‘January’ is a testament to this evocative quality. New York-based singer-songwriter Marc Delgado collaborates with The Century Band adding his dulcet tones to the melody bringing a soothing sensation to the track. Interestingly enough, while the vocals are rich and tender with a soul-soothing calmness, ‘January’ is actually a song about “life and loss…feeling lost on your own journey”. Then again, the poignant message includes acceptance of becoming older, more mature and accepting the inevitable.

Sincere, sentimental, introspective and genuine, The Century Band (along with Marc Delgado) release their anthemic new single ‘January’. Note: in addition to the song, the lads released an official music video which can be viewed below or on the Room Sound Records YouTube channel:
