The Butterfly Graveyard – Barcelona (2024)

Delicately exploring the complexities of reality, singer-songwriter The Butterfly Graveyard takes us on journeys through grittiness but also optimism. In an experimental swirl of sound, the Irish musician blurs the lines of pop and rock melding elements of indie-rock with dream-pop in a somewhat avant-garde eclecticism. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Barcelona’.

Following his well-received single ‘Dig A Little Deeper’, The Butterfly Graveyard shifts to a smoother, more soothing sound in ‘Barcelona’. Breathing life into vintage synth-pop, ‘Barcelona’ offers a hazy mist of music in which you easily lose yourself. While the track is mostly a wistful flood of twinkling lights and warm vibes, a slight stab of heavier electronic pop peeps in for a brief moment… then it’s back to the comfortable rush of music.

One element I find intriguing about ‘Barcelona’, and The Butterfly Graveyard’s melodies in general, is how they perfectly capture the song’s theme. They reach into the core of the concept, draw out emotion and lay things bare despite the misty tone. Inspired by a dream of songbirds carrying an architect to the top of a cathedral, The Butterfly Graveyard’s elegant vocals express their joy, excitement and celebration of freedom in ‘Barcelona’.

“This song is a homage to the city of Barcelona and to one of its most famous sons, the architect Antonio Gaudi. It was inspired by a visit to Barcelona, a stroll down Las Ramblas and its morning markets and the abiding memory of seeing quite a few songbirds singing from their cages. I remember that night back in the hotel I had a dream where Gaudi in the dead of night went to Las Ramblas and freed all those songbirds… In exchange, the birds agreed to fly Gaudi up to the top of his cathedral to better survey his work. This image of Gaudi bourne aloft by… songbirds stayed with me… I had to write a song about it.” – The Butterfly Graveyard on ‘Barcelona’.
