The Broadest Blue – In Blossoming Flows (2025)
The idea of a broadest blue immediately had me imagining a great pool of glistening water filled with gentle ripples and tumultuous lingering – the artist, The Broadest Blue, offers just this with his harmonic melodies. The brainchild of US-based singer-songwriter Kurt Juergens, The Broadest Blue embodies obscurity, originality, eclecticism and innovation in his otherworldly realm of cinematic sounds and poetic lyricism. Come with us as we delve into his most recent release, ‘In Blossoming Flows’.
Following his ethereal single ‘Fjallalavender’, Juergens shifts to a delicate weaving of indie-folk, soul, jazz, and something far too fragile, otherworldly and ethereal to describe. Profound but unbelievably light, confident but brimming with vulnerability, intense and weighty but with soul-stirring gentleness – ‘In Blossoming Flows’ is a whirlpool of duality. Truthfully, it is this complexity and intricacy bound in a simplistic barebones soundscape that wriggles into your brain, wins your heart, soothes your soul, and keeps you guessing what will happen next.
Electric guitars waiver in the melody, but it is the haunting tones of the piano, vibraphone, mellotron, and Stephanie Babirak’s harp that enhances ‘In Blossoming Flows’ silvery sonic sheen. An interplay of the various instruments combine in a hazy web while Juergens’ rich vocals seem to navigate the melody while binding it with bold warmth. A note needs to be given to the unique sound of hot springs during the vocal interlude – an audio sample captured during Juergen’s friend’s trip to Iceland and Juergen’s visit to the Weir Creek Hot Springs.
“At the heart of this song is the heart of the upcoming album: the structural freedom and surprises of an Impressionist prelude, crossed with the earthy sonic textures of a smiley smile or long live (Snowblink). It’s not an overstatement to say that after all of the songs I’ve written and recorded over the years, this is the epitome of what I was after… I wanted to take my listener to a physical location through the sounds they heard – some place maybe even they didn’t realise they were longing to be or had never thought of before.” – Kurt Juergens on ‘In Blossoming Flows’
Sincere, sentimental and somewhat fairy-like, ‘In Blossoming Flows’ is an intriguing introduction to The Broadest Blue. If this is anything to go by, I cannot wait for his upcoming full-length album.
