The Blues Fuckers Foundation – If You Feel Alone (2024)
Described as a rock ‘n’ roll band, The Blues Fuckers Foundation have the attitude of a rock band; however, their sound is somewhat alternative. Traipsing through various variants of rock, the France-based sextet blend daubs of folk, blues, funk, soul and country in a genre-diverse rush of music. While The Blues Fuckers Foundation only began releasing music last year – at least, according to Spotify – the celebration of raw, passionate music makes them a whale in a musical shark pool. Sophisticated, but with the ruggedness of a rambunctious rebel, The Blues Fuckers Foundation offer insatiable eccentricity. Join us as we delve headfirst into their single ‘If You Feel Alone’.
Taken off their 2024 three-track EP, Long Distance Road, ‘If You Feel Alone’ offers a strong leaning toward blues, but with a dash of country lingering in an Americana sonic wrapper. In a harmonic melody, powerful guitars meet a steady bass with toe-tapping drums bringing up the rear. One aspect I find intriguing in the arrangement is how each instrument offers a sense of harmonic joviality, but longing and melancholy seep through the melody. For me, the soaring guitar offers particular vulnerability in a somewhat haunting solo.
Melodically, ‘If You Feel Alone’ is heartfelt and entrancing setting the foundation for a painful love story, and the lyricism meets this theme. Executed with country-esque vocals, a dulcet voice captures the tumultuous but subdued despair of lost love and longing. The band explain:
“’If You Feel Alone’ echoes the sorrow of lost love, chronicling the poignant journey through the heartbreak of a breakup. The author, adrift in solitude, feels the weight of a fractured heart and knows, in the quiet spaces of longing, that the former lover also wanders in the same desolate sea yearning to return.”
Sincere, sentimental, and the perfect soundtrack to that really sad story you heard about lost romance, ‘If You Feel Alone’ cuts to the core, but in a good way. My one complaint is that the track ends too quickly. It may be over four minutes in length but, like all beautiful songs, you hardly notice the length. This is my introduction to The Blues Fuckers Foundation, and I cannot wait for more!
