The Big Happy – Long Way (2024)

Known for their energetic and enthusiastic live performances, The Big Happy has that way of dragging people into an insatiable wonderland of music completely oblivious to reality. It’s a great feeling – the vibe that emanates purely from an outstanding show. Described as having the ability to “deliver the perfect balance of original music and smash hits to keep everyone’s attention…”, the US-based rock band is not to be ignored. Just as they aren’t to be ignored, they demand to not be pigeonholed with their genre-diverse swell of sound. The latest addition to their discography is ‘Long Way’.

While this is our introduction to the foursome, and we’re a little late to the party considering the international following with critical acclaim, The Big Happy is a revitalising breath of fresh air in a sometimes-stagnating rock music scene. Following the fusion of rap-rock, reggae and alternative rock in ‘Karma’, The Big Happy weave together 90s indie-rock and alternative rock with hits of rap in ‘Long Way’.

Brimming with Jeff Weisz’s bold bass, Joseph Baquet’s soaring guitar and Jeremy Wecksler’s pounding drums, ‘Long Way’ has a melody to be admired in its raw rock format. Yet, even greater admiration shines through with the combination of Austin Morgan’s rapping and Baquet’s smooth singing – each rich in their own ways, but it is Morgan who adds a certain oomph to the overall track.

For me, the melody is a symphony of harmonic instruments with an intriguing rap layered atop the sound; however, the depth of ‘Long Way’ lies in its overall theme. The Big Happy explains that “this is a bop for anyone cruising in the car or on their bike or on foot and needs a reminder to slow down and take the moment in…” So, the free-and-easy groove with smooth vocals expresses the “ease into it” vibe, but the rap adds a sense of urgency only to finally be ensconced in the comfortable, chilled-out warmth of the overall music.

In addition to the single, The Big Happy released an official music video for ‘Long Way’. You can view the video below or on their YouTube channel.
