The Big Bloom – Maybe (2024)
With the aim of “…trying to have fun and make music that is interesting to us…”, The Big Bloom brings old-school indie-rock vibes with happy-go-lucky tones to connect with audiences on a joyful level. Then again, the band delves into the grittier sides of life exploring its complexities, but always with a cheeky grin. Friends since childhood, Sean Christ (vocals and guitar), David Americus (guitar), John O’Keefe (bass), and Michael Americus (drums) simultaneously capture the essence of early 2000s rock with a modern-day flourish. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Maybe’.
Following the well-received four-track EP La La Land, ‘Maybe’ is The Big Bloom’s second single release in 2024. Heavier than the indie-rock sound of ‘La La Land’ (the single not the album), ‘Maybe’ leans toward an old-school alternative rock meets pop-rock sound. Recorded at their home studio, then mixed and mastered at Chicago’s Gravity Studios, ‘Maybe’ is sophisticated in its production; however, a raw ruggedness exists in the track bringing the ferocity of a live show to our ears.
A bold concoction of pounding drums, soaring guitars, dynamic bass, and Christ’s gritty vocals ‘Maybe’ is the rock song you can have on repeat for days on end. Confident and forceful, but laced with subdued vulnerability, The Big Bloom captures raw emotion in a full-bodied melody. I can’t really compare the song or The Big Bloom to anyone, but it would be perfect on a “best of the 2000s” rock playlist despite being released 20 years later.
While the melody is intriguing on its own, it is the lyricism that adds profoundness to ‘Maybe’. Delving into the complexities of an ending relationship, The Big Bloom delicately explores tragic fragility. Just as there is vulnerability, there is optimistic empowerment saying that maybe things will work out. Maybe it really will be okay.
Sincere, sentimental and insightful, The Big Bloom showcases their originality and genuineness in the single ‘Maybe’.
