The Biebers – Sorry (2024)

When I read the name of this group – The Biebers – my mind immediately jumped to the Canadian singer Justin Bieber. While both artists lie within the broad pop genre, The Biebers have one up on Justin. Pop, yes, but seemingly incorporating diverse styles within their pop sphere, the Hungarian six-piece sprinkles funk, indie-pop and soul into a synth-driven melting pot. Moreover, The Biebers cross decades hitting up 80s synth-pop and then reaching out with a contemporary alternative pop vibe. Founded in 2012, The Biebers are an established act on the Hungarian pop scene, but their sound has reached beyond those borders garnering an international following. This is my introduction to the group, so I had a lot of catching up to do considering their debut single was released in 2013. Today, I take a gander at their track ‘Sorry’.

Taken from their album 2015 The Biebers, although originally released as a single two years earlier, ‘Sorry’ breathes life into 80s synth-pop similar to the likes of Depeche Mode, however, a light veil of 90s pop clings to the track. While one can nitpick on the high-paced tempo with bold electronic beats working through ‘Sorry’ in a steady but simultaneously a little “all over the place” tone, this song is to be experienced and not just heard.

A popular hit across Hungary, ‘Sorry’ is an anthemic tune perfect for the dance floor or as a fun sing-along while sitting in traffic. The shimmering twinkles of synths and electronic beats ripple through your body with a skin-tingling delight; in fact, you will have a grin on your face throughout the song. The bubble-gum pinkness of this glittering tune is jovial setting the scene for something special, but the vocals are the winning force of ‘Sorry’.

Performed by well-known singer-songwriter Péter Puskás, ‘Sorry’ is filled with bold, rich and warm vocals surrounded by comfortable electronic pop. Perfectly layered across the bright melody, Puskás’ pitch-perfect tone is clear and confident. The melody already lifts your spirit, but it is the vocals that win your heart.
