Track of the Day: The Banquets – What Ya Sayin’?
Exploding onto the scene in 2019, Leeds-based quartet The Banquets might be considered a young band. I mean two years old is hardly a seasoned act, is it? Regardless of their age, the UK-based foursome is already a well-known name. With their charismatic performances, enchanting melodies and powerful lyricism, The Banquets are on the tongue of many UK publications. In fact, they even supported The South (formerly The Beautiful South) on their UK tour. The latest addition to their well-received discography is ‘What Ya Sayin’?’.
Blending elements of contemporary pop, folk and indie-rock, ‘What Ya Sayin’?’ is an upbeat, toe-tapping track. A playful song with a buoyant nature, the sophomore single is filled with infectious riffs and choruses. Yet, with the joviality comes darker, grittier lyrical content. It is this inclusion of cheer and risque commentary that truly intrigues me.
A bubblegum-pop song, ‘What Ya Sayin’?’ has a cheerful ambience, but the impudence of the brusque lyricism gives it a brutal sharpness. Asking the questions we often think but never speak, The Banquet asks “who do you think you are” without abandon. The instrumentation is spirited, but it is Gemma Dee’s husky vocals that really add attitude to ‘What Ya Sayin’?’. She raises her eyebrow and gives you a cheeky wink with her captivating words. You can’t help but love it!
Side note: The Banquets have released a music video for ‘What Ya Sayin’?’. It can be viewed here.
