the Baker’s Basement – Wild Wild Sheep (2022)
For approximately one decade (give or take), US-based duo the Baker’s Basement has been sharing their unique indie-folk music with the masses. Based on the belief that anything can make music, Kate Dedinsky (vocals and percussion) and Adam Grindler (guitars and vocals) use their homemade percussion concoction (including upturned paint buckets) to create an intriguing sound. Featured on publications and playlists, such as Motel Void and iHeart Radio, the Baker’s Basement is building a loyal following across the globe. The latest addition to the duo’s discography is ‘Wild Wild Sheep’.
Following the single ‘Kings Hwy’, ‘Wild Wild Sheep’ is a kaleidoscopic track within a minimalist soundscape. Recorded by the Baker’s Basement at Sleepy Dog Studio and Luke Tweedy at Flat Black Studio, the song embraces basic instrumentation while still having a “bright lights flitting before your eyes” quality. Using their drums-based percussion concoction, Dedinsky and Grindler make a brash, bold statement; however, it is Grindler’s powerful guitar that sprinkles a classic rock texture in ‘Wild Wild Sheep’.
Inspired by the wild sheep we count when trying to fall asleep, there is an obscurity to the track. Interestingly enough, a dreamy, ethereal vibe engulfs listeners brilliantly representing the craziness of the sheep once you are asleep. Adam Grindler explains that ‘Wild Wild Sheep’ “is a song rooted in the power of imagination and the role of playfulness amongst the creative process. It’s a journey into our nocturnal process and a reflection on the sense of wonder that can be experienced when you allow yourself to step out of your own way and roam free.”
Eclectic, experimental and highly obscure, the Baker’s Basement show they are not to be pigeon-holed with ‘Wild Wild Sheep’.
