The Arcane Insignia – The Violence Within (2024)
Singer-songwriter Lodrö Nyima shares that “the true purpose of art isn’t to embellish the ordinary to make it seem extraordinary, but to undress the ordinary so as to reveal its innate extraordinary nature…” – this is overwhelmingly evident in The Arcane Insignia’s blending of ordinary classical and ordinary metal revealing something outstanding. After meeting through a Craigslist advertisement, Lodrö Nyima (vocals, guitar, percussion and piano) and Noah Heau (cello) bring an eclecticism to their experimental music. Inspired by acts like Opeth, Katatonia, Pain of Salvation, A Perfect Circle and TOOL, to name a few, there is a profound depth of metal in the heartfelt sincerity of classical all oozing in an emotional, soul-stirring sonic experience.
Following the well-received singles ‘Huma de Vela’ and ‘Vicarious Virtues’, ‘The Violence Within’ is one of the tracks on The Arcane Insignia’s upcoming album A Violent Whisper (set for release in October). As with previous material, ‘The Violence Within’ has a skin-chilling flow between touching classical and aggressive metal; however, there appears to be greater fluidity of genres including a slap of charming acoustic folk. Nyima explains:
“Released on the anniversary of when I met the love of my life, the entire album [A Violent Whisper] is a dedication to her, who passed away in 2021 due to an accidental overdose. Beginning with this song, I aspire to share my life experiences through combining the emotional, touching quality of classical music with the raw, naked anger of metal while keeping the aesthetic entirely acoustic.”
Recorded and produced with Jeet Suresh Paul, listening to ‘The Violence Within’ is like setting off on a glistening sonic river in a comfortable little boat. Soft and soothing, the melody opens as you bob slightly on the gentle ripples. Simple and calm, you peak at the water only to see the tumultuous waves beneath… and then it hits.
Dragging you into a whirlpool of darkness, the clash of guitars and drums collide with Heau’s cello tossing you through a rollercoaster of sound. A slight folk element covers the underlying metal screams but never comes to the surface. Suffocating and skin-tingling, the chilly water whips you about, but you are not scared. In the frenzied chaos, a complex intricacy is both soothing and insane so while you alight on the ferocity, warm light seeps into your soul.
