The Afro Nick – Get There Before Noon (LA Mix) (2024)

With a free-flying Afro that Bob Marley would be proud of, and a non-judgemental freedom to match, The Afro Nick brings the all-accepting attitude to audiences across the globe. While his vibe may match reggae icon Marley, the difference in style and generation lingers in the timeless themes.

Raised in Crete, Nick Anastasakis (also known as The Afro Nick) notes his earliest memories of music being the local Romani playing their guitars on the Venetian cobblestone streets; however, it is an indie-rock allure that shaped Anastasakis’ brand of modern music. Established as the founder of the band Stray Blue in 2009, Anastasakis premiered as one of the first indie-rock bands in Crete; his sound reached international proportions, and as a solo artist he debuts with ‘Get There Before Noon (LA Mix)’.

Known for his “…wild, expressive hair – which incidentally serves as his namesake – it symbolises an uninhibited freedom, a tangible representation of childhood rebellion extended into adulthood…” – a belief that flows through the single ‘Get There Before Noon (LA Mix)’. Joined by George Athanas (bass), and Grammy award-winning Leo Genovese (synths), ‘Get There Before Noon (LA Mix)’ is a rhythmic concoction of soaring guitars, a bold bass, and layers of shimmering synths.

In my opinion, the indie-rock light shines bright, but a hit of classic rock melds in an alternative pop tone with some plink-plonk psychedelic rock-ness of sorts. Dragging us back to yesteryear, nostalgic memories of the 70s and 80s emerge with the soul-stirring and soul-soothing charm of vintage rock. Yet, as much as ‘Get There Before Noon (LA Mix)’ rushes past your head with old-school sounds, it is the timeless message that adds contemporary weightiness to a full-bodied single. Anastasakis explains:

“‘Get There Before Noon (LA Mix)’ is a song about making the most of life in the moment that you can… You only have one life. You gotta do what you have to do and do it as soon as possible…”
