thankmelater. – karma (2023)

Founded by long-time friends and fellow bandmates of rock band Eight Six Press, Eric Vattima (vocals) and Jacob Redding (guitar and production) blend elements of punk, alternative rock and indie-rock in thankmelater. With only two singles to their name (including the one we are going to look at), US-based duo thankmelater. has proved they are more than emerging artists – they are a force of nature making waves on an international scale. Receiving coverage from IGGY Magazine, Rising Artists Blog, Music For All, Roadie Music and Rising Artists Blog, the pair are reaching audiences far beyond their US borders. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘karma.’

Following their well-received debut single ‘shutmedown.’, thankmelater. showcase versatility in the new track ‘karma.’ Enthusiasts of alternative rock and hip-hop/RnB, in fact, something they bonded over as college students, Redding and Vattima insert a hip-hop vibe into a grungy melody.

As with ‘shutmedown’, ‘karma.’ presents a dark melancholic sweep of music tossing you into a gritty, grimy sonic pool of despair. Redding’s bold guitar sends a wave of heavy grunge to ‘karma.’ with Vattima’s rich vocals adding an obscure oscillation between hip-hop and alt-rock. With all these elements bound in a four-minute wrapper, you feel rather defeated and drained after listening to ‘karma.’… but in a good way.

Just as the melody is breathtaking enticing an intimate sense of vulnerability, it is the lyricism that enhances the intense fragility and vulnerability in ‘karma.’ Jacob Redding shares:

“’karma.’ Is a literal explanation of the ending of a (my) relationship. From getting kicked out and sleeping on the floor to late night drives wondering where it all went wrong and who’s to blame. It’s a reminder to myself that at the end of the day that other person was in the wrong and one day, they’ll get their karma.”
