Ten Hail Marys – I Still See Your Face (2024)

While this is our introduction to the Irish group Ten Hail Marys, the foursome have been sharing their unique blend of alternative rock since 2022 (or at least according to Spotify). Along with their enigmatic, energetic and utterly intoxicating live performances, Adam Cullen, Dillon Doyle, Jake Murray and Joseph McGuirk intoxicate international audiences as their melodies burst through your speakers. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘I Still See Your Face’.

Following the well-received singles ‘Bruises, Cuts’ and ‘I Had A Dream’, Ten Hail Marys breathe life into old-school alternative rock with ‘I Still See Your Face’. Dragging me back about 30 years, hints of 90s rock emerge with the band’s combination of scorching guitars, pounding drums and a powerful bassline. Yet, just as there is sophistication in the elegant combination of instruments, raw grittiness twinkles in ‘I Still See Your Face’. Confident and bold but with a sheen of innocent tragedy, Ten Hail Marys finds a balance of maturity and youthful wistfulness.

One aspect I find particularly intriguing about ‘I Still See Your Face’ is Ten Hail Marys bringing the forcefulness of live shows to a studio-recorded single. With the kaleidoscopic rush of sound, I can imagine being lost in the throng of a hyped-up audience pumping my fist in the air and screaming with infectious glee. Interestingly, while the song is made for festivals, it brims with a sense of solace and comforting charm that is individual and intimate.

The melody itself can win your heart, but it is the theme that adds weight to the song. Tackling the complexities of love and loss, ‘I Still See Your Face’ “…discusses what could be the loss of a loved one or a relationship that has come to an end – the band leave this decision up to the listener.”
