TELGATE – GAMMON (2023)

For about four years, the UK-based group TELGATE has been entertaining audiences with their energetic, hard-hitting, powerful music. Known for enthusiastic and exhilarating performances, the Cardiff Queers have played notable festivals with artists including Destroy Boys, Wendy James, and Petrol Girls. While TELGATE is garnering a loyal following with their jaw-dropping shows, they are turning heads internationally with coverage from Classic Roock, NME, Metal Hammer, Kerrang, Mesmerized, Circuit Sweet, She Makes Music and many more. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘GAMMON’.

From their debut single ‘Cherrytight’ to the most recent release ‘GAMMON’, TELGATE insert an insightful punch in their music. Yet, while the band retains a similarity to Hole with the insanity of Courteney Love blasting through the vocal execution, ‘GAMMON’ shows an evolution in TELGATE’s sound. Leaning toward the 1970s glam-rock period with thunderous drums, dynamic guitars and psychedelic sensationalism in the hazy ambience, ‘GAMMON’ is a blast of nostalgic joy hitting you between the eyes. The interesting thing is that while the new single is an old-school style, the angst and aggression of modern-day garage rock slivers through the melody.

This is my introduction to TELGATE and what an introduction it is. The melody bowls you over with its jaw-dropping arrangement but, at the same time, you feel compelled to twirl about with a grin on your face. A second away from sublime, TELGATE feeds you bliss with the rock-filled embrace. While the song has an underlying groovy vibe, ‘GAMMON’ is more provocative than you could imagine. An exhilarating musical statement, TELGATE scream an “old-fashioned fuck off in the face of all things right-wing…a statement towards the current state of the British nation…it’s exactly what the rest of us are thinking and a sincere anthem for change.”
