Teddy Clarke – Poor Man’s Son (2022)
Described as an “authentically unapologetic” artist, singer-songwriter Teddy Clarke is a profound, provocative and thought-provoking musician taking on complex existential themes in his music. Along with our ears, Clarke has captivated audiences across the globe featuring on Find No Enemy, Sinusoidal Music, Its All Indie, Indie Rock Café and many more. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Poor Man’s Son’.
Hot on the heels of the track ‘I Can’t Wait To Forget’, Clarke revisits feelings of vulnerability and raw emotion in ‘Poor Man’s Son’. Unlike ‘I Can’t Wait To Forget’ which describes the desire to forget a dysfunctional relationship and deal with those painful emotions, Clarke employs his natural storytelling skills to look at class division, social standing and coping with an existence where it is continuously more challenging to carve a comfortable place in your little world.
“I think it has become more and more noticeable over the past few years how the incredibly wealthy continue to profiteer and make more money than ever, whereas anyone not born with a silver spoon is finding navigating life increasingly difficult. ‘Poor Man’s Son’ talks about a boy having this realisation at a young age and trying to defy the odds which he feels are so heavily stacked against him.” – Teddy Clarke on ‘Poor Man’s Son’
Melancholic themes run through Teddy Clarke’s music touching on dystopian realities, but ‘Poor Man’s Son’ appears to have an optimistic thread woven into the lyricism. As Clarke shares, the song is about a boy realising the desperate state of the nation but trying to defy those challenging odds stacked against him.
Similar to ‘I Can’t Wait To Forget’, ‘Poor Man’s Son’ has a strong post-punk sound reminiscent of The Cure; however, the new single brings a heavier, alternative rock sound. Fresh but familiar, the dynamic guitars meld elegantly with pounding drums in a sophisticated arrangement. What I truly adore about ‘Poor Man’s Son’ is not just the lyricism or Clarke’s unique vocals, but how the pace seems to align with the feelings of frustration, determination and vulnerability. The melody has a palpable strength and you can almost see the determined fierceness on the protagonist’s face.
Sincere, sentimental and introspective, with a raw authenticity to the song, Teddy Clarke releases his moving single ‘Poor Man’s Son’.
