Tash Hills – Diamond Life (2023)
Making her name as a stand-out artist in the nu-funk genre, Tash Hills is a breath of Demi Lovato slivering through a Chaka Khan melody. Inspired by old-school funk artists like Quincy Jones, George Benson and Chaka Khan, it is clear that Hills would have some groovy vibes to her music, but she takes the grooves to a new level. However, and this is something I really love about Tash Hills, there is a style to her songs making them both vintage and contemporary. The vintage sound is obvious jumping out at you from the first chord and is often built up with jazzy horns, but it is difficult to pinpoint the modern-day sentimentality. It’s an enigma that captivates funk in the 21st century with the attitude of Marvin Gaye.
Produced with James Berkeley (an established professional in the UK jazz, soul and RnB scenes) and penned with songwriter Billy Vena, Tash Hills touches on self-discovery and acceptance in the empowering ‘Diamond Life’. Hills explains that “…this song talks about how to love and believe in yourself, how to be confident and know you are enough and beautiful inside and out”.
