Tanya Goltz – No One Wins (2023)

At age 15, it’s often the case that teenagers are completely unsure of what they want to do or where they wish to go in life – Tanya Goltz knew better. With a strong case of wanderlust, she left her small hometown in Australia to explore the world. Skip ahead some years and Goltz has a bundle of life experiences from which she draws strength, inspiration and greater life knowledge. Touching on life in its totality, Goltz explores triumphs, challenges, love, loss and the human experience in her upcoming EP, Pieces of Me. We’re here to dive into her latest single ‘No One Wins’.

Following her well-received singles ‘Dead Of Night’ and ‘Steal My Soul’, ‘No One Wins’ retains the distinctive country sound Goltz is known for. With the effortless blend of pop, rock and country, Goltz offers a contemporary sound with a nostalgic vintage flair. Influenced by Jewel, Sarah McLeod and Sheryl Crow, her melodies have a sassy, empowered “badass female” attitude but with a softer sensitivity behind the bold vibe. In ‘No One Wins’, Goltz leans once again to the power of Sheryl Crow but inserts an alternative rock edge in the style of Alanis Morissette.

Produced with Aria award-winning producers Andrew Cochrane and Steve James, ‘No One Wins’ features Goltz’s ever-present country sound but with an undercurrent of gritty rock and sensual blues. A guitar-driven tune, a rhythmic guitar opens the track with harmonic binding of the various instruments to come. Catchy hooks and riffs insert the country vibe before the guitar sets off on a blues-rock tone bringing sexy cheekiness to the track. Yet, while the guitar is a strong element in ‘No One Wins’, it is the fiery keyboards and pounding drums that add lilts of sassiness to this sonic river.

The melody is a toe-tapping tune that anyone can enjoy, but it is Glotz’s bold vocals slither through like a golden thread vibrating in a vivacious sonic tapestry. Bringing the hard-hitting 90s rock to the 21st century with individuality and genuineness, female ferocity hides beneath a flush of obscurity in ‘No One Wins’.
