Tamarind Dream – Grapefruit (2020)

A lot of people are filled with a bittersweet feeling about the present state of the world. If you are one of these people, Tamarind Dream has created the perfect soundtrack for your emotional state with ‘Grapefruit’. The single uses the fruit to symbolise the bittersweet feeling of what has been left behind and the potential of what we have to look forward to.

This is done with a melded soundscape that brings elements of RnB and psychedelic rock together. Daniel Bond and Tarik Khan seamlessly blend elements from different genres with unique vocals and cascading guitars for an emotional experience. Their soundscape is unlike anything you might have recently heard.

‘Grapefruit’ draws you in with an intricate guitar line that wraps around your head. There is a great flow to the melody when it combines with the RnB beats. The guitar line continues to lead you through the song and you can’t really get enough of it. While the song seems to have a minimalist melody, the simplicity actually bolsters the messaging of the track. The dips in the melody are great as they make the pickup even better. The rolling drums add a bit of jazz to the song while the guitar brings in gentle psychedelia.

The RnB flavour of the track is primarily introduced through the vocals. They have this wonderful flow that has you swaying to them. The performance forms the higher level of the track and draws you into the bittersweet feeling of the world. The lyrics take you through the sadness of what has been left and the need to move forward. There is a sense of hope in the vocals and lyrics that things will become sweet again in the future.

Tamarind Dream works through the bittersweet feeling that many people have right now in their single ‘Grapefruit’. Using a blending of RnB and psychedelic rock, the band has you grooving to their flow.
