Talks Make Do – Room For Love (2023)

While Dutch indie-pop group Talks Make Do only became active this year, the quintet shows a sophistication far surpassing their relative newbie status. With bold, confident stage performances and engaging melodies, Talks Make Do is winning hearts both in-person and online. From France and the UK to their native Netherlands, the group is reaching beyond their home borders (and in my opinion will be turning heads all across the globe rather soon). The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Room For Love’.

With a distinctive nostalgic flair, Talks Make Do grabs you by the hand and drags you to the 1980s. In their debut single ‘Ripples’, the group covered listeners with a new wave/pop style; however, ‘Room For Love’ breaks through with an indie-pop meets funk sound. Retaining a retro ambience, the lads carry a torch for vintage melodies reliving the days of Wild Cherry – play that funky music, right!

As with ‘Ripples’, ‘Room For Love’ has an elegant cohesion in the arrangement oozing catchy rhythms and harmonies. The fusion of guitars, keys and drums creates a warm sonic pool in which you lose yourself; however, a slice of lead guitar cuts in with a rock solo. Bold and brash, the rock-inspired blast removes one from the overall funky vibe but with the groove simmering beneath. While the complete melody is a toe-tapping, smile-inducing, “get up and dance” tone, it is frontman Alex Hoevenaars’ rich vocals that give it an edgy something special.

A love song at its core, Talks Make Do brings a lyrical essence of Marvin Gaye to ‘Room For Love’. Touching on the intricacy of romance and obsession, the lads sing “about an unbridled longing for mutual love” in a soothing, mellifluous way.

With a quick wink, raising of an eyebrow and a sexy, cheeky grin, Talks Make Do melt your heart with ‘Room For Love’.
