T.A. Narrative – Sway (2024)
The musical sensation of childhood friends Tara Nix and Anna Murphy, T.A. Narrative is a gut-busting, soul-stirring, skin-tingling rush of something entirely indescribable – although I will do my best. Navigating various slicks of pop and punk, T.A. Narrative are eclectic with an experimental non-conventionalism; however, as obscure as the pair is, their music simultaneously has familiarity reminiscent of 90s/2000s pop-tinged sounds. This is my introduction to the Irish duo but, as with the familiar but fresh sound, their music is comforting with a collision of chaos. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Sway’.
Following the critically acclaimed single ‘Caught Out’, T.A. Narrative drag listeners back a couple of decades to the pop slicks of the 2000s with ‘Sway’. A concoction of heavier commercial pop flecked with hits of old-school funk and a sheen of hip-hop slithering through the melody, ‘Sway’ is bouncy, bright, toe-tapping and laidback. Yet, just as it is charmingly innocent and playful, there is a heavier darkness laced in the vocals adding complexity to the track.
As with the duality of their songs bringing light to dark, confidence to vulnerability, and tragedy to empowerment, T.A. Narrative gather both reckless abandon with sophisticated precision in ‘Sway’. Vivid and kaleidoscopic, audiences lose all sense of reality in its passionate lurch of sound. A shove of encouragement to “…get lost in the music”, you want to jump, scream, shout, grin, twirl and feel the vibrant music tingle every nerve.
So, what can I honestly say about T.A. Narrative and ‘Sway’? Like I mentioned, it’s nearly impossible to describe the duo; however, the lingering sensation of ‘Sway’ can be defined in a single word: amazeballs. I wait with bated breath for their upcoming EP.
