Sylvatic Black – Deadly Kiss (2023)
Creeping onto the metal music scene with a gothic swoop of sound, Swedish duo Sylvatic Black engulfs your senses dragging you down to a dark tumultuous sonic pool. Beginning when Christopher Labi Rance and Miriam de Silva sang a duet in 2022, Sylvatic Black was a concept not necessarily a project. Jump to 2023 and the pair release their debut single ‘Deadly Kiss’ to critical acclaim. Despite being a new act, the duo is reaching beyond their Swedish borders with coverage from TJPL News, Nordic Music Central, Head Bangers News, Rock Noticias, Indie Dock Music Blog and many more. Come with us as we take a deep breath and plunge into Sylvatic Black’s music.
When I came across Sylvatic Black, I was unsure what to expect. Their images and artwork cover scream metal but their music is not as heavy as I thought it would be. No doubt, the pounding drums and crashing guitars build a hard-hitting melody; however, there is a slip of lighter alternative rock flowing through the hard rock/melodic metal tone. Not too much of a difference but I wouldn’t place Sylvatic Black alongside Evanescence. I would, however, compare Miriam de Silva’s powerful vocals to Lacuna Coil’s Cristina Scabbia.
Using themes of vampires, witches and Northern mythical figures, Sylvatic Back aim to entrance listeners with “thrilling stuff”. With exquisite clarity, the arrangement has an elegant sophistication making each instrument stand out in the melody. The drums beat along to your heart while the guitars tumble down in tumultuous rage. Yet, while each of the instruments is prominent, they come together in a harmonic whole – a harmonic whole to kiss you goodnight in its gothic style.
As I mentioned, Miriam de Silva’s vocals are powerful but there is also a haunting vulnerability belying the shivering intensity of her angsty voice. She may be telling a tale of dark vampires but there is a tinge to her tone connecting to the fear of the protagonist in an eerie brashness. Prepare for that deadly vampiric kiss.
