sydneyunicorns – The Crown (2021)

There are times when you see someone, even for a second, and know they have the ‘it’ factor. With her single ‘The Crown’, sydneyunicorns takes the next steps from this encounter, and looks at the knowledge that we have that same power and magnetism within us. Through her flowing pop tones, she pushes us to harness this inner power and wait for the right time to act and exist in it.

This empowering single continues the heady pop mix of her sound. A classically trained musician, she combines choral undercurrents with dark yet ethereal overtones and powerful vocals. Bringing classical to contemporary pop, she has you moving to her beats that vibrate with a heavy bass, before you realise what has happened.

‘The Crown’ pulses with some hyper-pop energy through the opening. There is a brightness to the synths that open the single, that is quite addictive. Beneath these really light and bright synths, there is a beat that builds to get your heart racing. This drops for the synths to take over again. Through all of this, the low levels of the melody have a slightly classic edge to them. It is a wonderful melody that really showcases different styles and the versatility of sydneyunicorns.

While the melody bubbles around you, the vocals are definitely the shining star of the track. They enter with that moment when you see someone who seems to have a magnetic field around them and draws everyone to them. There is a touch of sadness to this line, as you feel that you don’t have that same presence. This leads to a chorus that is choral in its layering. As the single progresses, the vocals fill you with the passion to have that same pull and the understanding that it is in all of us. When this realisation hits, the lyrics turn slightly introspective, as you discover that you need to reach in and draw on this inner power, but to wait in unleashing it until the best time. It is a really inspiring single that fills you with the strength to take on anything that life has to throw at you.

With the layered and fusion tones of ‘The Crown’, sydneyunicorns fills you with strength and the understanding that inner power is resting in all of us. The melody bubbles with bright pop tones, while the beats build to get your heart racing. While this is happening, the vocals make the track, as they acknowledge other people who draw you in, while bringing the understanding that we all have this power and it is waiting to be unleashed.
