Svicideghost – Sticks & Stones (2022)

Performing under the moniker Svicideghost, US-based Christopher Francis Chuilli sends chills down the audience’s spines with his music. Emerging onto the scene in 2021 with his well-received single ‘Orange In Black’, the singer-songwriter adopted a modern-day pop-punk meets old-school emo tone in his sound. Quickly following this single, Svicideghost began featuring on international blogs like Thoughts Words Actions, Sinusoidal Music, Roadie Music, Its All Indie, Vents Magazine and many playlists. The latest addition to his well-received discography is the single ‘Sticks & Stones’.

Described by the press as “upbeat and incredibly hearty” (Sinusoidal Music), “lyrically honest” (Vents Magazine) and “angry and expressive” (The Cage), Svicideghost has the power to captivate one’s head, heart and soul in his songs. Following the six-track EP When I’m Gone, this American artist nods toward 90s pop-rock with ‘Sticks & Stones’. Reminding me greatly of bands like Good Charlotte and Blink 182, the softer, gentler pop-rock sound sends you afloat on a glistening sonic river; however, Svicideghost’s edginess bursts out about halfway through the two-minute single.

So, what do I mean by his “edginess bursts out” – just that, there’s a massive burst of music that highlights the tumultuous waves on that sonic river. With a strong leaning toward emo-rock and pop-punk, Svicideghost’s rich vocals hit you in the chest with a raw, brutal gruffness. The track goes from smooth-flowing laidback vibes to an assault on the senses in literally a millisecond – but you’ll love it!

Just as the melody is rough and raw, so is the poetic lyricism in its intimacy. Sentimental and sincere, ‘Sticks & Stones’ is one of Svicideghost’s more vulnerable singles. He shares that ‘Sticks & Stones’ is a song of heavy reflection “…based on events that happened during and after the Covid-19 pandemic with myself losing an exceedingly close friend due to their personal insecurities and animosity towards myself without doing or knowing what I did to have them be this way towards me…” Interestingly enough, while we hear this despair, angst and desperation in the melody and vocal execution, there is also an empowering quality to ‘Sticks & Stones’ as Svicideghost shares his “personal goal of mine to have these songs I create hopefully one day help others as music helped me through good and bad times…”
