Susy K – Hear It From Her (2023)
Described as “beautiful and delicious…” (Roadie Music), “enchanting” (Sinusoidal Music) and having “…killer jazz chops” (Phantom Power Music Blog), singer-songwriter Susy K is a true force of nature when it comes to musical skill. The daughter of opera singers, Susy K was, as she said in an interview with Indie Top 39, “singing before I could speak”. A little cheesy for sure, but what do you expect from such a natural talent in the music industry?
Inspired by artists like Chaka Khan, Stevie Wonder, Mica Paris, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin and Erykah Badu, Susy K finds her middle ground in a jazz meets soul sound. Don’t get too settled in her soulfulness though as Susy K also hits up the hip-hop tones of Missy Elliot and Eminem; as well as pop with a love for Michael Jackson and Jamiroquai (does Jamiroquai count as pop? Ah well, he does in this article). In the interview with Top Indie 39, Susy K noted that “…variety is the spice of life.” She captures this sentiment brilliantly with her new EP, Hear It From Her.
A collaborative project with producer and multi-instrumentalist Dave Browning, Her It From Her effortlessly dips into different genres while retaining Susy K’s distinctive soulful jazz style. Opening with the track ‘Heal’, we hear a Sade vibe flowing through the track making it ideal for those smoky jazz clubs – just like the one in Sade’s ‘Smooth Operator’ video. The drumming, piano and horns enhance the smoothness of the single as Susy K brings some sensuality to the melody.
The opening track sets the scene for a soothing sensuality sound; however, Susy K and Dave Browning continue to surprise us with the diversity of Hear It From Her. Smooth and sexy, ‘Heal’ has a soul-stirring sway but Susy K really pulls attitude from the jazz tones giving you a bit of a slap with the tracks ‘Workin’ and ‘Hear It From Her’. Taking the diverse element further, we hear tinges of electronic pop in the song ‘Keep On Going’.
One aspect I love about Susy K is how she fills her songs with strength and attitude but retains a mellifluous flow. Comparable to Aretha Franklin with the power of her vocals, Sade with the sexiness, Amy Winehouse with the vulnerability and Erykah Badu for obscurity, she falls in line with masterful musicians. Yet the overall sound we hear is one inimitable and completely Susy K.
Oozing passion from the first to last track, Hear It From Her touches on empowerment, healing, hopefulness and optimism. Rattling in your cranium, sending chills down your spine and leaving you breathless, Susy K and Dave Browning intoxicate you with this new EP.
