Susie Cousins – Revelation (2025)
With her feet in two musical pies, Susie Cousins might have a classical background, but her interest in various genres brings a unique flair to structured symphony. Having created soundtracks for documentaries, composing numerous classical pieces, and keeping an eclectic spirit alive with her genre-diverse releases, this singer-songwriter is no minnow in the industry’s shark pool; however, her charm and grace have her standing out amidst the creepy hammerhead sharks. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Revelation’.
The lead single off her full-length album, Hotel Estelle, ‘Revelation’ is an encapsulation of classical clarity with an emotional kick of folk and indie rock clinging to the sonic package. Produced with Les Nuby, there is a sophisticated elegance to the track, a gentle flow flooding your mind with an ethereal haze. Yet, as much as Nuby sprinkles maturity across ‘Revelation’, Cousins presents an intricate flush of wistful obscurity, heart-tugging vulnerability, and soul-stirring fragility.
Melodically, ‘Revelation’ is one of those songs that seem to seep into your skin and ensnare your senses; the place where you breathe music, feel music, and are lost in the music. For me, however, duality oozes from ‘Revelation’. An intricate weaving of human fragility with clarity and “stand up and listen” honesty and empowerment. Susie Cousins explains:
“’Revelation’ is a bit of an emotional exorcism, capturing a moment of decision to leave chronic toxicity. In it, one can picture the “fake happy” of a relationship that in public view was portrayed very differently than it felt internally… I believe I bring the wisdom and perspective of mid-life to my lyrics… a depth and meaning that are only found in unabashed self-reflection and emotional exploration. I know that ‘Revelation’ will ring true for anyone who has left an unhealthy relationship of any kind, whether with a partner, family member, or institution.”
Sincere, sentimental, and a breath of fresh air on a dull Monday, Cousins takes you on an emotional rollercoaster with ‘Revelation’. For me, a shout-out to the strings needs to be given as they enhance both the haunting intimacy and thrilling empowerment of the song. All in all, this is a singer you must keep your eyes and ears on. Highly recommended!
