Superswell – I Don’t Believe It’s True (2023)

If Arctic Monkeys were to have a child with Dodgy and it was raised by Supergrass, the chances are likely it would be Superswell. Originally known as Fake Frank, the US-based group chose to embrace 2023 with an entirely new identity. Frontman Dan Avedis Masotti explains that “…the journey as FF has been rewarding to say the least, however, this most recent line-up is something special and it feels right releasing our new music under a new name”; thus, Superswell was born.

As with everyone encountering this brand-new band, ‘I Don’t Believe It’s True’ is my introduction to Superswell. Interestingly enough, while this is the first time most of us are hearing from the foursome, they are already garnering fans on a global scale. From Egyptian Rock Era Magazine to Edgar Allan Poets and It’s All Indie, Superswell is reaching audiences on at least three continents. Come with us as we delve into their debut single ‘I Don’t Believe It’s True’.

Recorded with producer Matt Murphy at Sabella Studios, ‘I Don’t Believe It’s True’ is a hard-hitting, high-paced, energetic rock-inspired track. The high-powered guitar swells effortlessly blends with pounding drums to create an “in your face” melody. One element I find particularly interesting about ‘I Don’t Believe It’s True’ is not the nostalgic throwback to 90s alternative rock, the uncanny likeness to Queens of the Stone Age, or the heart-pumping guitar solo carrying the song from verse to catchy chorus. No, it is the transition from one style to another in a split second that makes me step back. From hard rock to pop-rock and funk, the lads showcase ingenuity, eclecticism and innovation as artists.

A brash, bold and gruff vocal execution, Masotti’s voice slithers into your head, rocks about your cranium, and leaves you with a hint of Three Days Grace riding a rockabilly rollercoaster. Yet, it is not this obscurity and sophisticated diversity that showcases the band’s profoundness – it is the poetic lyricism. A love song, believe it or not, ‘I Don’t Believe It’s True’ is poignant, desperate and intensely intimate. The band explain that this debut single is “a nuanced break-up song that delivers a scathing response to virtue signalling behaviour”. Intriguing, intoxicating and insatiable, I cannot wait to hear more from Superswell.
