Super Fëmmes – Love & War (2023)

Drawing together the phenomenal talents of 90s pop icons Emilia Mitiku, Denise Lopez, and Miio’s Josefine Willers and Mia Schotte, Super Fëmmes blends electronic music with old-school pop sentiments and a contemporary pop edginess. Since their electropop cover of ‘Everybody’s Free’ with Hertzberg & Funke, Super Fëmmes has been described as “…dynamic and upbeat…” (Find No Enemy) and “catchy and dramatic…” (Pop Muzik). Originally a five-piece with Therese “Drömhus” Grankvist, the foursome is holding its own with powerful, passionate beats in their latest single ‘Love & War’.

Following the track ‘Guilty Pleasure’, ‘Love & War’ is the ladies’ first release in 2023. Blasting into the new year, Super Fëmmes bring a heartfelt, enchanting tune to audiences. Recorded with Tor Eimon and Jakke Erixson, ‘Love & War’ has an upbeat, toe-tapping arrangement that has you dancing about from the first chord. Yet, while the single is perfect for clubs twirling you about in a kaleidoscopic pop haze, there is a wistful intimacy playing throughout the track. It belies the powerful pop vocals, interspersed rapping and overall playfulness touching on an underlying vulnerability in the lyricism.

Penned by Max Brandenburger, Jakke Erixson, Tor Eimon, and band member Denise Lopez, the single touches on romance. Instead of exploring a negative toxic relationship, Super Fëmmes looks at the other side of the coin. An overwhelming love can appear cute or sweet, but toxicity belies the absolute addiction and intoxicating frustration of obsessive love. The ladies sing of a guilty pleasure, not being able to get him out of their heads and going anywhere for this person – nice if it’s taken in moderation but on an addictive level it can ruin your world. I find this mixture of enjoyable, entertaining pop hiding a darker, deeper and more vulnerable message simply outstanding.
