Sunset Surrender – Lies, Lies, Lies! (2023)
In many cases, if we want to progress in this world we need to shift from the norm. To learn from your experiences, particularly the mistakes, and evolve in more mature ways. This is the case with Sunset Surrender. Fresh off a rebrand from his previous moniker The Golden Hour, singer-songwriter Matteo Zandonella Bolco presents his new project Sunset Surrender. In a fluid transformation from synthwave/electropop tones to intricate fusions of post-punk within a synth-pop sphere, Sunset Surrender is a natural progression but also a fundamental evolution in Bolco’s sonic landscape.
Following his 2022 album Lives Like The City, the single ‘Lies, Lies, Lies!’ sees Bolco tapping into his inner Joy Division. A nostalgic sweep to the heyday of post-punk, the synth-driven melody pushes you into a mystic sonic forest wandering about in the hazy fog. Soft and soothing on one hand, you can enjoy a mellifluous flow in the melody; however, the other side of the coin has a piercing vulnerability breaking through with tumultuous waves.
Just as ‘Lies, Lies, Lies!’ has you intoxicated with the sublime melody, the lyrical intensity adds a melancholic gut-wrenching feel to the track. Highly reminiscent of Ian Curtis in both sound and words, ‘Lies, Lies, Lies!’ captures the raw despair behind the theme of deceit. A pool of misery whirls about us as Sunset Surrender confronts the feelings of angst, pain, fear and turmoil.
