Sugar Scars – Miss You (2024)
Considering the diversity of Mexican and American cultures, one might consider a clash between these when creating music; however, Sugar Scars puts all that aside. The bi-national project of Texas-based and Chihuahua-based multi-instrumentalists, their music gravitates toward each other embracing diversity and creating a “unique and eclectic triumph”. From ethereal dream-pop undertones to hard-hitting grunge with slivers of indie-rock, Sugar Scars is difficult to describe – a perfect sonic expression of their melting pot cultural differences. Sugar Scars explains that “our songs depict an ideal situation on the dance floor with someone that fascinates you, and results in two becoming one on the dance floor in a moment of bliss…” – the latest single ‘Miss You’ eloquently captures this blissful moment.
Taken off the full-length album Rhythmic Body Reflexes, ‘Miss You’ is on the heels of the critically acclaimed single ‘Haight’. A relatively new project, Sugar Scars only began releasing music this year (according to Spotify); however, their sound has them shimmering as a shining gem amidst a cluster of sonic pebbles. As with the well-received track ‘Masonic’, ‘Miss You’ has the underlying electronic pop tone but with heavier rock-infused tinges atop the melody.
Perfectly layered, the powerful dream-pop elements rush forth in a kaleidoscopic haze of foggy music. Moreover, a step of electronic beats incites an EDM sound easily placed at any of your favourite nightclubs; however, the brashness of grunge slices in gritty distortion with each element going off on a tangent before coming together with rock juiciness. One of the most intriguing aspects is not the obscure compilation of rambunctious music but the vocals. Confident and rich with bold warmth, yet simultaneously delicate fragility oozes from the dulcet tones.
I wouldn’t call ‘Miss You’ sentimental or sincere, but there is an intoxicating sense of brutal honesty in its overall execution. Sugar Scars explains that “’Miss You’ is a dance song but… lyrics hint at addicting toxic love leading to the inevitable crushing of the heart…”
In addition to the single, Sugar Scars released an official music video for ‘Miss You’. You can view the video below or on their YouTube channel.
